What is sampling in music?
Definition:
In music, sampling is the act of taking a portion, or sample, of one sound recording and reusing it as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece.
(A bit of history...)
Sampling started in the 50s and 60s, when avant garde composers spliced tapes of other composers' music to use in their pieces. This led to the minimalist movement and influenced psychedelic rock and jazz fusion. Hip hop was the first pop music genre to use sampling, in the early 70s. DJs experimented with using two records at the same time with an audio mixer. This idea spread to the electronic music and disco genres, which in turn influenced electronic dance music and industrial rock.
What is a sample?
A sample is a short piece (or sound) from another song, used in a new song, either repeatedly or just once.
Examples:
Who sampled who???
Other examples
Eminem's Stan sampled Dido's White Flag
Blink 182's Adam's Song sampled Nirvana's Come as You Are
Kanye West's Gold Digger sampled Ray Charles' I Got a Woman (copyright infringement!)
DMC's Walk This Way sampled Aerosmith's Walk This Way
Troll's Hair Up sampled Grieg's Peer Gynt (as well as other songs)
Other Notes:
How to create your sample:
1. Use a YouTube to mp3 converter (ok because it's not the WHOLE song).
2. Input via midi.
