Using Audio Effects in GarageBand
You can alter the sound of your tracks using audio effects. In recording studios, effects are used to improve cleanliness of tracks, to improve pitch and timing, and to enhance the sound, just to name a few examples.
Effects can get pretty complicated - so let's start with some of the more straightforward ones! In GarageBand, effects differ with the type of track.
- Automation allows you to control volume, panning, echo, and reverb of each individual track.
- To automate a track, click the automation button. To change the volume, pan, echo, or reverb, click on the line and drag the dot.
Here are some more complicated and cool effects - you can play with any and all effects and see what it does to the sound.
- Click on the "smart controls" button. Click on EQ. You can control the frequencies by playing with the "shape." Left = lower, right = higher. If you click the Analyzer, you can see the actual frequencies of the track, and that will help you choose what to change.
- The equalizer will balance the frequency of your tracks. For example, if you are trying to improve the sound of a bass line, you can add higher frequency and if you are trying to improve the sound of a high instrument, you can add low frequency.
- There are also specific effects for different types of tracks and instruments, such as chorus, tremolo, and compression.
- In the smart controls, click on i for inspector. This will give you even more instrument specific effects.
- Click on the Master to control all the tracks. You can also access the Master Track in the Tracks menu.
- Gain has to do with volume. You want to have a good balance of gain and volume.
- In the sound library, scroll down to "Legacy" and play with the effects that are available.
